The Great British Bake Off returned to our screens with a brand new series this week, and episode one of was full of all the ups and downs we’ve come to expect from the show. I’ve picked out my top FIVE moments…

1. STAY ALERT — PROTECT CAKE — SAVE LOAVES

There was no better way to introduce comedian, and new co-host, Matt Lucas, than open the new series with a comedy sketch.

Coronavirus rules have sometimes left many of us scratching our heads and there seemed no better way to capture the moment than to dress up Matt Lucas as the Prime Minister in what Bake Off quipped a ‘Daily Proving’.

The sketch included mock advice like ‘Bake in a tent; don’t bake in a tent’ and the always controversial pronunciation of scone.

The sketch was served up with the mock, bright yellow slogan ‘Stay alert — Protect cake — Save loaves’.

2. MATT LUCAS — THE SECRET INGREDIENT?

Great British Bake Off fans around the globe were sad to hear that Sandi Toksvig would not be a part of this year’s series, but optimism soon grew with the announcement of comedian Matt Lucas as her replacement.

The star of Little Britain has quickly won the hearts of thousands of Bake Off fans in the first episode alone with incredibly funny moments like his awkward silence in his first challenge countdown: “On your marks… get set… BAKE!”

Further brilliance came when one contestant pointed out she didn’t realise Matt was homosexual, to which he quickly replied: “I help them out on weekends.”

Following his star debut, fans of the show took to Twitter to express their love for the new co-host:

Sandi Toksvig will always be a Bake Off legend, but is Matt Lucas the secret ingredient to take the show to the next level?…

3. THE UPSIDE-DOWN DISASTER 😮

Bake Off has seen its fair share of baking accidents; from Ian Watters’ throwing away his melted Baked Alaska in 2014, to Deborah Manger using fellow contestant Howard Middleton’s custard back in series four.

In only the first episode of the new series, disaster struck once again as the bakers took on making miniature Pineapple Upside-down cakes.

The time came to serve up the end result for Prue and Paul, but when contestant Sura attempted to swat a fly, she accidentally whacked four of Dave’s cakes onto the tent floor.

Sura burst into tears over the incident, but Dave stayed calm and said: “Don’t worry about it, it’s fine. I’m sure they can go by what they looked like before I brought them over.”

If not to make the whole situation worse, Sura won the challenge and left viewers at home speechless 🙊.

4. CAKE SCULPTURES FROM HELL

What’s the best way to ease 12 new Bake Off contestants into the show? Pretty sure none of you would’ve made them create a head out of cake! But alas, this is Bake Off and anything goes!

Making a cake was easy enough for these contestants in Week One’s showstopper, but it all fell apart when they had to actually make it look like a celebrity.

For baker Laura Adlington, her attempt at sculpting Freddy Mercury hit disaster when the Queen star’s head fell apart as she placed it on the shoulders.

In the end, one former contestant of the show summed it up perfectly:

If a Pringles Freddy Mercury lookalike wasn’t enough, here are my top three funniest sculptures from the challenge:

5. AS SAUCY AS EVER

The one thing that’s certain from Bake Off are the countless innuendos and they were back with a bang in the first episode of the new series!

In the past, audiences have been in fits over Mary Berry and her soggy bottoms, but even after Prue replaced her in the switch to Channel 4, there’s been no shortage of eye-raising comments.

Viewers were left laughing this week as Prue politely asked one baker: “Can I take a bite out of your carpet?”.

Even more gold was served up with Music Teacher Rowan exclaiming: “We all need a bit of waft-age.”

Sometimes, you can’t help yourself…
